Best insurers for remapped ECU

I've just been told by my insurers that they won't touch my 2003 150 GTI for a 40-45BHP ECU remap. (Seems daft as their quote for a 180BHP Mk4 is only £30 dearer than I'm paying now.) They do however offer the best standard (unmodified) rate for me (35 yr old full NCD), being £80 cheaper than the next lowest quote.

Does anyone know the best insurance co for modified cars? It's not as if I'm going the whole hog - all I want is a remap that will take it to 190-195 BHP.

Hi mate, i work for hic/golf+ insurance (08451 266366 see the deals/discounts section) and i could cover a re-map for you no probs, would probably get a load of about 25% for up to a 50bhp increase. PM me your number if your interested and i will be happy to have a look for you mate

Mine's up soon, I got a quote from www.adrianflux.co.uk with my remap from 150 to 202 bhp, for £325.

29 yrs old, 9 yrs NCB & 3 points SP30.

Do they slap a huge excess with that? I've always been reluctant to use smaller insurance firms as you never know how they will react to claims. Are they reputable?

I've gone through Adrian Flux aswell, but the actual policy is with Royal Sun Alliance. mines a standard 150bhp.

£330 per year with £250.00 excess. (which is over £300 cheaper than Zurich)

They are sending a bloke out to inspect the car (presumably to make sure it's standard) I've never had that before, but it makes me think they are doing their job properly.

You will usually have a slightly higher excess on a modified vehicle. Both ourselves and Adrian flux are specialist brokers who have been trading over 10 years and have arranged schemes for modified cars with selected underwriters so you will often be placed with a company you recognise anyway. You dont really get brokers who are not 'reputable' anymore as all brokers have strict FSA regulations they have to abide by or they are not allowed to trade which is why many local brokers shut down when the FSA rules came into force. Get a copy of a specialist magazine such as Performance VW, Golf+ or VW motoring etc and you will find loads of specialist insurers for this sort of thing.

There was no excess stated, as it was just a preliminary quote. Last time I was with them, it was £350, IIRC. That was a few years ago, though.

ps I made a claim with them in 2001. Apart from them changing their minds whether to write the car off or not, there was no major hassle. Got a loan car & also got a good price for my (smashed up) motor.

I use brentacre insurance, mods no problems and they are reasonable too
