Compensation Advice
« on: 20 November 2003, 12:45 »
Had a car go into the back of my golf last week whist I was sitting at traffic lights. Did a bit of damage needs new rear bumper etc. Exhaust rattles like hell. He and his insurance people have accepted liability with no problem at all.

My question is - what else should I claim for? I mean besides the damage to the car is there anything else I should not forget to claim for? You see I have never claimed a thing in my life. So this is the first time for me. Car will be in the repairs for a week and they are providing me a courtesy car - but I keep thinking that I am entitled a lot more - the shere inconvenience of it all for a start!

Perhaps someone here has been down this road before and knows what it is I should be claiming for? Perhaps there is nothing much else?

Any advice would be welcome.

Many thanks.

Being a mere female probably talking rubbish but to be honest I wouldn't claim for anything more. If you are not injured and can work etc.... then what more do you want? Yes its a pain in the backside but you are lucky you have got a car at all some people have to go wothout all week too. Dont mean to sound harsh but I dont think claiming for anything more is fair on anyone. It pushes everyones insurance up the more people who claim for things.

Hi

I have never been in an accident or never claimed a thing like yourself but.... try phoning a "Where there is a blame, there is a claim" type company and explain your situation.

Say you suffered whiplash after the accident and your neck is still sore and hurting.

Also that you are having nightmares and cant sleep because you are constantly thinking about the accident.

You got nothing to lose.

Let us know how you get on.

I'd be warned though most of them are a rip off and take most of your winnings and then all thats does by sueing is makes everyones insurance higher in the long run. I hate those companies. Has anyomne else noticed since certain companies have gone bust (The A Group is it along with others?) insurance is going down slightly?

Its a well documented fact that in many cases whiplash can take a number of days, occasionally even weeks, to materialise, so don't for one second thing you're too late to claim for that, or even that it won't appear.

What I would suggest is that you substatiate it by getting yourself to the docs pdq, getting a sick note and a neck brace on.

On the car note, I would get it thorughly looked over, don't just assume bumber and exhaust are all that is busted - have a full suspension geometry check and adjustment done, and add that to the claim. Did you have your hand brake on when it happened? I (successfully) claimed for 2 flat flat-spotted Yoko's when I got shunted.

At the end of the day, there are professionals out there milking insurance companies for ridculous sums of money every day, and that is part of the reason that everyone pays astronomical insurance. I fully support anyone wishing to claim 'that little bit extra' for inconvinience and to stick it to the insurance company every once in a while, as you are just ensuring that you are not out of pocket and are fully recompensed for the inconvenience.

Good luck buddy

When i was crashed into some1 pulled out of a side street into side of me, and i damaged ligaments in my shoulder, resulting in 3 weeks of work, including missing my golfing (no pun intended) holiday and to make it worse it happened on new years eve so i couldnt drink and was in agony untill i could go doctors, nhs walk in centre was a waste of space, she was only bothered about whiplash despite me saying over and over my shoulder is in agony, i got ?2025 in the end.

You all have very valid points to raise and your advice is very welcome - so big thanks evryone.

Yes I did have the handbrake on when i was hit - if I didn't the force would have launched me into the car in front. You see - now I would have just been happy that the immediate visual damage has been done and probably walked away only to have a related problem come up later I hadn't thought about. So thanks for that.

Secondly, whiplash. I come out of it with no injury at all. HOWEVER...a relation of mine was also involve in a rear end shunt a few years back that also seemed to left no injury on her self. But 6 months later back and neck pains she thought were due to poor posture at her place of work was in fact a result of her accident. So now she is telling me to get to the doctors immediately - even if I am not in pain right now - but just to be sure. So I understand some of you when you say I should be thankful for what I get - but then there is a little voice in my head that is saying - don't just accept what they are offering. They are getting off damn lightly!! >:(

Thank you all - keep posting. Appreciate all replies.

By all means get checked out and glad you are OK. It just annoys me when people claim for loads and loads and then still work and do us (the general public) effectivly out of money. For genuine cases thats what its for.

Good luck though I'll get off my soap box now LOL. Sam xxxx
