Losing coolant??? (1.8T)
« on: 27 February 2006, 18:23 »
Hi, I've been checking my coolant every morning since I bought the car about 4 days ago as the 'check coolant' light keeps coming on.  Anyway, I found the post saying that this is common and nothing to worry to about as there is coolant in it.

My problem though is that every morning when I'm checking it it's gone down.  I top it up to the max lin, and it's always lower the next morning.

There's no obvious leaks from having a quick look underneath and water doesn't seem to be getting into the oil.

Is there any common places I could check first, or any other ideas?

Cheers.

I found parking on a slant kept causing that message..... Took me at least a week to figure that out! :grin

I just topped it up a little way over the 'half way bulge' on the header tank!

No, it's parked on a flat surface and it does seem to go down the same ammount but not sure if would stay there or not as I've been topping it back up to max.
Should I just leave it and see what happens?

Yeah, if i were u I'd leave that for couple of days and check again. if the level does not drop any further then its probably the coolant level falling due to circulation of fluid around the system rather than the false high level u get immediately after top up. If u leave it a couple of days and the level falls further still u might have a small crack in a coolant hose, you'll have to get your head right in there or take it to a mechanically minded friend for inspection.

Cheers.  I've not topped it up for 2 days now and it has settled at the same position just underneath the max mark, so I'm hoping it was just me being paranoid.... new car and all that!
