locking wheel nut removal
« on: 23 February 2006, 12:11 »
does anyone know of any subtle methods of removing locking wheel nuts, I have lost the adapter. and I will be changing my wheels soon, I don't really fancy chiseling them off as I want to keep the wheels for winter use.

In my experience you are best to take the car to a tyre fitting garage. They are experienced at doing such a job and often have the right tools. Doing it yourself only leads to blood sweat and tears!

or u could try bashing the closest size socket over them but i would go to an auto centre let them do it, much less stress

the last time I did that with a company car they ruined two of the wheels, but hey thats what job cars are for I suppose, just didn't fancy letting some spotty 15 year old loose on my wheels with a hammer and a bad attitude.

I've used a socket that is one size smaller than the locking wheel nut and hammered it onto the nut and then using a large bar - to get leverage on it - I buggered up the socket though... but it worked out well and didn't damage the wheels...

Most tyre or wheel places can do this as well for you - they usually do what I did above.

They came with the wheels when I bought the car, they are similar in design to the macguard ones, but I have no idea what he code is for them.

tyre centre should have a set of snap-on locking wheel nut removal tools, they're like a threaded cone shape, they lock into them grip and hey presto, i took a plastacine mould of mine and made a new key out of a long reach socket and the welder for the key lugs...
