MFA MPG reading

I have a Mk2 Golf GTi 8v 1990.  The MFA gives a reading of 10.0 to 13.0 appox reading for average fuel consumption.  I've heard that some peoples MFA give an actual MPG figuer rather than this reading that i'm getting.  Is there anything i can do with mine to get a real MPG read  out?  The manual says divide my reading by 282.5, this seems a rather long winded way of doing things.  Any ideas???

sometimes the MFA goes a little pete tong, check the vacuum pipes to the cluster to make sure they havent perished.
