Turbo Problem, help required.....
« on: 20 February 2006, 19:56 »
Hello, i bought a golf 1.8 turbo (99 t reg) a few weeks back, this was sold as having high pressure turbo fitted and being chipped and putting out 220 bhp. now the car has never felt 220bhp quick, but does feel quick all the same.

So today i had bailey Dv36 fitted and the lads at Deutsche mark in doncaster, noticed that there was a vaccuum hose coming from the turbo attached to the bulkhead and even worse, the pipe that connects to the wastegate on the turbo wasent connected either.

So question is, is this a cheap way t try and con someone to think its the high pressure turbo due to the fact its constantly running maximum boost?? the Turbo whistles like crazy aswell, which is a little worrying.

Unfortunatly there is no service history and no receipts so i have no proof, and to add insult to injury the place i bought it from's phone number no longer works and there not in yellow pages either!!

Getting worried.

This is what I would do in your shoes;

First question is does your car work at the moment?

If so then have it checked out. Have a mechanic find exactly what turbo has been fitted, then get him to check out your ecu. I wouldn't go taking it for a RR test to get a reading just yet, sounds a bit too risky to find out if you have 220 horses.

If it appears that you've been had I would take the extra you paid for the car (estimate around 4-4.3k for a T reg turbo) and go looking into who sold you the car for a few pounds back.

I wouldn't be expecting to get anything back and take it as a lesson for the future.

Finally, did you just say you got a bailey dump valve fitted? I was sure I read it was a costly thing to get done to our cars as dv's alter air pressure and cause the engine to stall. Anyone verify that's correct or am I reading it all wrong?

Got the bailey one fitted today, sounds pretty nice (not too loud), i beleive its only the later engines that have problems mines the earlier AGU version.

Problem is i cant get in touch as phone number dunt exist no more and there company int in the new yellow pages.

It was from a place in SHeffield called Burngreave Van Sales on Burngreave road, near northern general.

When cars back i'll pay the place a visit but without a car i aint gettin t sheffield lol.

It does run, and i had the lads at Deutsche Mark have a quick look at turbo today but with out taking the turbo off its a little difficult to make markings out.

Should be taking it to well lane turbo centre soon tho, apparently they know a fair bit about these cars and fake chipping.

Basically, yes, the cheap method they've used to fake some extra power from the car could quite possibly have damaged the turbo, as well as the rest of the engine. The ECU can adjust fuelling to suit 'unrequested' boost slightly but the timing is static. That's why a proper remap is so pricey, they adjust so many things.
I've no idea what a 'high pressure turbo' is supposed to be, chances are you're still on the stock Borg Warner K03. If it is goosed, you can pick them up fairly cheap off ebay, or you can upgrade to a K03S from a later car for a bit more power if you get it remapped, which bolts straight on apart from a slight mod. to the inlet pipe.
If you do need a new turbo and have trouble sourcing one then drop me a pm.

Cheers Topher, the High Pressure Turbo was meant to be the K03s, from a 180bhp golf.

Just found out tho that  car was serviced in sunderland on 31/7/03 with 80141 miles on clock and when i bought it in feb this year it had 82500 miles on clock!

Really Gutted, but payback is a b!tch
