How low do you think?
« on: 19 February 2006, 10:41 »
My Golf had been lowered before I bought it, on Eibach Springs and Spax Shocks. It says on the receipt that we have that its -30, however we think its a bit lower. Had a full set of new tyres fitted yesterday (first set since having the car), and for the first time the car is starting to rub on the rear arches (quite severly).  :embarassed:

Just wanted your opinion on how low my car is. Could you take a look at the attached pics and let me know what you think?

As you can see, the wheels are Audi TT 17's with 205/40/17 tyres.

We think that perhaps the shock's or springs or both may have gone, and thats why its rubbing so bad with the new tyres. I need to know what you think the car is currently dropped by, before I go out and buy a new shocks & springs set at -30.

The distance from the centre of the wheel to the arch is 12inches.

Anybody else had this problem?  :undecided:

Any help would be appreciated, as I need to solve this problem ASAP before my new tyres get killed! Cheers all.

Well, this pic:

Is an 8v on standard suspension on the same wheels.

That car used to catch the arches big time when you had any weight in the back.

I reckon -30 is fairly realistic. The new tyres must have a different shape sidewall to the last so they are now catching.

If they are catching now, raising it slightly with different springs won't solve the problem since once you have some movement it will still rub.

sound to me that the new tyres have a slightly different side wall shape to your old tyres.  This is quite common between brands.

As you have only changed the tyres and its now rubbing i can't see it being anythig else.

its easy to check the shocks for leaks etc, before you have to spend a fortune.

There are three choices really

1 get your arches rolled at about £50 each
2 change your tyres at the chance another brand gives you enough clerance
3 change the shock/spring set up to raise the car (but you don't want to do that as it looks sweet as is)

Does anyone know anywhere in the South Wales area that does Arch Rolling?
We looked a couple of years back for someone for a different car, and couldnt find anyone that does it!   :undecided:

I am also thinking hese wheels may have a smaller offset than than standard Mk3 wheels ? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

You need a body shop with an arch rolling machine !

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Yup, I think thats the only way to go now too (without having to change my Alloys, and I dont want to do that). But I cant find anywhere near to me that does it!

Do you all recon the car has only been lowered 30mm or more?
Hubby has checked, and he says the shocks & springs are fine. We thought they may have been knackered.
