CD unit/cubbyhole
« on: 17 February 2006, 09:29 »
I've noticed many of the mk4's have a CD player above the radio/cassette. Mine just has the cubby hole.

Is it possible to remove the cubby hole and fit another stereo above the radio/cassette and if so, is the wiring already there? Reason I ask is that I would really like to keep the original head unit but it would be great if I could fit my MP3/CD player above it. I'm hoping all I would need is some standard ISO adapters if the wiring is already there.

you can indeed remove the cubby hole as my Single CD (factory fitted) player sits above the stock unit.

as for the wiring I can't be any help as I haven't got any tools to remove the radio  :embarassed: Though i would have thought that the wiring is in place  :undecided:

I need to get hold of some pins to remove my head unit and have a look. Think I'll try the stealership today.

had mine in and out quite a few times, it is ISO plugs to accept a diff head unit in place of your gamma unit. but as for fitting one in the cubby hole place you would need to butcher adapt your original wiring to get all your feeds and just use one of the head units at once !?.

one thing though: i think you mite struggle to keep the new head unit in the cubby hole slot as there isn't a surround to lock the stereo cage into on the top and bottom - u'll see what i mean when you remove your gamma unit.

I've just had a quick look in there and the only connectors I can see go straight into the back of the gamma unit. I assume the CD units must daisy chain off the radio/cassette so I'd need to get hold of an original gamma CD unit with wiring, I reckon.

I don't want to lose the original gamma unit and I certainly don't want to butcher the wiring so Hazel gets to keep the MP3 player in the Polo.

I may have the offer of an 'in dash' original 6 disc changer that I can buy and fit so that may be the better option.

i think its the cable below you use to connect the in-dash CD changer

also - were you able to get the pins from the dealership?? if so how much were they??

Cheers

That looks like it doesn't it. With any luck any 2nd hand unit I pick up will have the lead with it.

I didn't get the pins, I managed to the whole fascia out enough to see behind, with radio still installed. Will have to get them at some point though I guess.

Just make sure it has the Yellow, Blue and Green connector on the changer cause that will plug straight into the Gamma unit. The correct changers have a molded changer lead and cannot be removed.
