Dim-Dip? Or just plain dippy?

I'm sure my car used to have this - when you put your sidelights on (the high beam sections have a little 5w bulb for this) the headlights come on really dim at the same time.

Anyway, mine's not doing it now. I can't see any reference in the old Haynes manual diagrams either...

Whose does it then? and whose doesn't?

It's the dim dip coil under the airbox (front left hand scuttle panel as looking at the car

How come there's no mention of the little sucker in the Haynes manual then??

Mines only ever lit the 5w bulbs in the full beam lights when i put the side lights on. But then, mine could be faulty as well i suppose!!!!  But i think they look nice that way so il keep mine as they are

edit,    I just read this in the handbook. "On vehicles for some export countries when the side lights are switched on with the ignition switched on, the dipped headlights also come on with reduced intensity"   Hmmm, i might have to nip out and check this. But maybe the UK wasnt one of the countries that needed this by law???

ok so I finally fitted the quad conversion and I want it now!

Does anybody know the offending part? seeing as it works on my driver and not on my gti, I want to swap the offending part over!

well funnily enough I looked for this coil last week and couldn't see it! so any help would be great.....

no. 17 (eventually) describes a relay for models with dim-dip headlights, but doesn't say where it goes. Might have to read the manual!
