Do u reckon the mk2 will become a classic??
« on: 18 November 2003, 11:40 »
im stuck in two minds with my 16v, whether to keep it or sell it

i've had it for just over a 18mths now, and no joke every part of the running gear has been replaced due to failure at some point, the last being the power steering which its still of the road because of

the only other thing it needs is a respray as its a bit tatty in places with dints and rust bubbles, which i was planning on getting sorted in the new year

i do love it to pieces, but at the mo im driving an mazda mx6 on loan, which is effortless to drive but just hasnt got the fun factor of the golf

but im getting sick & tired of pumpin money into the car!!

its one of the last 16v's & has leather interior etc and has just over 80k on it

so the big question:-

will it ever become a sought after car? or am i just wasting money on it for the sake of it?

controversial.. you have any basis in fact for that argument?

here's my take on it..

while the 8v may be a dog (which is why I left it out, and why some people dont call it a 'real gti') the 16v has similar performance to the MK2 16v, and has more in common with the VR6 than the 8v, for example only the 16v and VR6 have traction control.

I think what i comes down to is how different the Mk3 Gti 16v is.

Is it a quicker car than the standard Golf?
Is it a limited edition?
Is it like any other family hatchback?

I'm not dissing the mk3 16v - I just don't think that its a classis like the mk2 gti or the vr6.

^ why?  just 'because' isnt enough reason.

I think what i comes down to is how different the Mk3 Gti 16v is.

Is it a quicker car than the standard Golf?

only using two marks of measure here taken from teh performance page on this site.. ( http://www.golfgti.co.uk/viewfeature.asp?featureID=11 )

first off.. 0-60 times.. sorted fastest -> slowest

Mk3 2.8 VR6  - 7.1
Mk2 1.8 16v  - 8.0
Mk3 2.0 16v  - 8.5
Mk2 1.8 8v -  9.0
Mk3 2.0 8v - 10.1

second off bhp and top speed since they both turned out in roughly the same order...

(by bph then mph )

Mk3 2.8 VR6 174  138
Mk3 2.0 16v 150 134
Mk2 1.8 16v 139  124
Mk2 1.8 8v 120  115
Mk3 2.0 8v 115  124

so the mk3 16v is more powerful and has a higher top speed than the mk2 16v, but isnt quite as quick to 60... whereas you can see the mk3 8v is a sack of sh!t...

Is it a limited edition?
no. there are a lot more 8v gti's out there. i'd like to know how many there are in comparisonto the 8v and vr6.

Is it like any other family hatchback?

in what way?

what difference other than the engine/performance is there from the vr6? none.
