Yep......check out the inlet to the inline pump, costs nothing.

I'm not really up on mk1s , i've never owned one. Surely if the car has a lift and in-line pump, the lift pump is new so have a closer look at the in-line pump.

tell me about it, the car has been threatened with the bin if it wasn't sorted. probs like this ruin the whole drive. but if what you have suggested works....
