Hi guys,

My mate is looking to buy his first car! Naturally with me as his friend he is looking at Golfs! As it is his first car he cannot get a GTI the insurance wont allow it the most he can do is a 1.8 driver!

We went and looked at a blinder on the weekend. A 91 8 valve. It was in excellent condition for its age with no bodywork problems the guy has had all the brakes done recently at a cost of ?400 and it was his daily runner until he got a company car! I test drove it and was amazed at how well it ran and how tight it felt. The guy is asking ?550 for it, he dropped from ?750.

Thing is; its done 166k. I looked at the back when we started it cold and it didn't seem to be burning oil or chucking out any sh!t!

What do you guys think is ?550 a good deal on a car in excellent condition with this high mileage or are we gaybar to even consider it!? Your help would be very much appreciated!

you could probably find one with 120k on it for the same money

also with a 1.8 driver all you need is the GTi cam & Gti manifold and you've more or less got yourself a GTi

to be honest 550 isnt the end of the world and nor is 166k. just check for crash damage and buy it.

the problem with GTIs is that they are thrashed, so if you find a nice one with high mileage that looks like its been looked after its probably worth it.

again, if it turned out to be dog, drop a couple of hundred quid and move it on to another punter.

Sounds ok to me, its only 550 so go for it. Don't go for a driver , they got those awful pierburg carbs on them. The k-jet is a much better engine, and a good one for tuning.

Go for it! I have seen worse examples for that price so you can't go wrong.
