ABS light, damn ABS light
« on: 17 November 2003, 15:49 »
Failed MOT on friday on a couple of what I would have thought were smallish points including the ABS warning light on dash not working.

Ive fixed the other stuff.

Is the ABS light important,  would it fail again if I left this not fixed?

Would there be any other reason for the light not working besides a blown bulb?

The ABS light has to light then go out, this happens when you start the car. This is part of the MOT test so get it sorted. Does the ABS actually work? if it does then its probably just a blown bulb. You might need to replace the whole thing ie. ABS and AIRBAG warning light panel, not sure though.

My MOT is due this month, I had the same problem. The bulb is not replaceable without removing the soldering and re soldering a new one. The chip pannel will have to be replaced. But.... if the bulb is blow/broken...My bulb had been broken (the car has a less than unmolested past) I removed the small light bulb from a cheapy Halfords illuminated switch, it has long thin wires attatched to the middle terminal, then curled them round the terminals of the old light bulb, test bulb style, plugged it all back in and turned the ignition.. Bingo flicked off after a second or so. It came back on and stayed lit up till I turned the ignition off and on again on the first run but it has only come back on as intended on ignition. Give it a try, you could only need to spend 99p 'ish. Does the ABS need to work if fitted for the MOT ??? It won't affect the braking efficiency.

If ABS is fitted it must work for the MOT, including the light sequence.

Is the ABS still working even tho the light is out?

If its not (due to failsafe system) then it could be the ABS sensor.

The light only comes on when the car starts, then goes out. If it stays on or doesn't come on at all , it could be a problem with the ABS. Go out on the road and test the ABS.

I had the same kind of problem leading up to my MOT -

ABS light would not turn off - tested ABS on clear road, was fine. The garage replaced a sensor, all was good again.
Cost about 45ish if I remember correctly??

.............hope yours is as simple as that mate.
