Is the car fitted with a M5/M6-style power switch?

Dry road = 237/250
Wet road = 200

Does anyone have any info on this????

I am picking my new car up tomorrow and will not be a happy bunny if it is very soon out of date. I achieved a good discount of 6% on a UK dealer car and also another dealer offered me a similar discount on cars they had in stock......so maybe they wanted these cars away as soon as possible. All of a sudden maybe my big discount could be making sense.

Where did you manage to negotiate 6% discount from a main dealer, I recently (about a month ago) contacted all my local dealers in the Dorset/Hampshire area and not one of them would even consider a discount. When I was in one of the dealers I was prepared to place an order, if they would give me metallic paint, they wouldn't so I walked out!

Regarding the power increase, from a marketing point of view it seems very, very unlikely, although I certainly think the GTI could do with the power hike. It would then make it the undisputed hot hatch, but at the same time it would certainly ‘upset’ all the current owners!

AMD or QST will add you another 40 +bhp for about £700, i don't think you need it though as  most GTIs (well mine) does 0 - 60 in 6.1 seconds, there is no way it will go faster with more power as the wheels will be spinning!

through out the years VW have never made the fastest hot hatch, but simply the best all round, they prob made it to have 200 bhp on purpose when they knew companies like ford and vauxhall will make more powerful cars, well lets face it they have to, coz otherwise people wouldnt buy them!

Agreed with Neaty on this one.

I love the build and robustness of the Golf (VW generally). The MKV took the awards in 2004/2005 for best all round hatch.

exactly its not just about straightline power, now i am sure that the ford and vauxhall are handly through the bends as most of them through the years have been but, u get the feeling that the 222bhp ford and the 237 bhp vauxhall's engine is the party piece where as with the golf its just the tip fo the ice berg!

Gents, IMHO I would disagree with anyone who says that anything over 200 bhp is too much for FWD.

I`ve had my GTI re-mapped to 245, and yes, whilst it will spin the wheels given some provocation from a standing - start, for me anyway, it`s more about the extra that is felt when rolling, and believe me, the increase in torque is absolutely fantastic !

The thing just pulls everywhere now, needing even less gear-changes than before. It really is THAT good.

I have spoken to my dealer & they have confirmed they have heard rumours, but they are normally the last too know!

I cannot imagine "Car magazine" publishing information & this not becoming reality. Also the Mk4 GTI started life with the 115BHP & this increased to other options for the 150BHP & 180BHP, so don't be surprised if the 237BHP becomes available, perhaps for the Anniversary.

I am personally not interested in increasing the BHP of the standard GTI with chips etc. However, if VW did introduce a more powerful GTI as standard, I would be very interested. Albeit that I only took delivery of my GTI on Wednesday!
