what does the temp gauge read?

mine never goes above 1/2, but the fan will come on just a smidge below half, when i first got the car i thought it was constantly overheating, so i got the thermostat changed/ bleed the system etc

the fan was still coming on, then i found this was normal! as long as the temp doesnt go above 1/2 & the oil temp goes no higher than 120 then your fine

Check the water pump as the fins can break , ignition timing as retarded timing can cause the engine to run hot, and get the coolant system checked for exhaust gases as could be start of a head gasket failure.

replace the metal pipe and then see if that cures your problem, your gonna be losing pressure through it and that makes your water boil to early.

Which metal pipe? i've seen my water boiling very early may be replacing the pipe will resolve the problem.

My thermo stat reads just above the middle when moving, however when at standing still the thermo stat will start moving higher up until i start moving again then it returns back to the centre.

Cheers.

i think the pipe referred to runs from the side of the cylinder head down the right hand side and stops by the oil filter area. im not sure about 16v engines tho but its a starting point

In your above statement you are saying that a metal pipe is leaking. The coolant system is supposed to be sealed as this is what raises the boiling point of the coolant and allows the system to function correctly. Any leaks are bad news as you will be losing much needed pressure and boiling up coolant.

I would remove the rad and reverse flush it and whilst it is out flush the engine as well to ensure there isnt any crap in there creating a blockage.
