how f..king much!!!
« on: 06 February 2006, 22:55 »
Just been to a local garage to get the gti looked at,after the clutch started to slip, mechanic told me it would cost £250 to replace my clutch!!! Is this right or is he just trying to get some beer money out of me???
The problem is the gearbox oil was over filled and the clutch began to slip, cos of it being swamped from gearbox etc,so it was all drained and the clutch still slips slightly, the mechanic reckons its a dead horse, and wants my cash....what do you all think?? Is he right, should it cost me £250 or does anyone know where I can get one cheaper in the north east.....also does it definatley need doing?? or is he just winding me up??

me too, my clutch has just gone...
would have thought the oil had already done its damage....
mate had one done near me said it cost him £100 plus the clutch..
so on that score £250 would seem a bit rich...
im gonna have a crack at it myself... if i balls it up ill pay the garage to do it.... but at least im giving it a go..

£250 is pretty spot on for a clutch change as it takes so long to do it normally. Gearbox out etc.

I would have thought that just putting 3/4 of the reccommended amount in the car for a week and driving it on medium journeys would dry the oil off the plate, then allow you to refill it.  :undecided:

Maybe it all depends on where u live and who you know eh weedwacker?

Why not phone around some of your local garages see what they say? Or see if u can pickup a clutch cheap n jus pay labour?

Hmmm, dunno mate, gearbox oil gets absorbed into the friction plate and 'contaminates' it....

My clutch has gone too, my local garage (carro's automotive services - see the good guys section!) have quoted me £100 to fit my clutch if i supply the part and i just won a brand new clutch on ebay for 28.00 + postage (dunno what the quality is like tho so not sure if it will cope with my car). Definatly worth trying a few other places i think!

good luck!

Was going to suggest that you buy the clutch yourself and then ask a Garage to fit it. They usually mark up 200%~500% on parts to sting u and supply them with beer for a week!
