Clutch problem?
« on: 16 November 2003, 16:50 »
My 16v mkII has developed a dull scraping in the movement into every gear. Its kinda audible and doesn't feel good. I know that's not much to go on but does it sound like a warn clutch to you guys?

Does it feel as if the clutch hasnt been fully depressed, if so could be the cable.

What does the clutch operation feel like? could be worn clutch or cable. Check the gearbox oil level as well.

Well just had full service would they have checked gearbox oil? Afraid I don't know how to do that myself  ??? Feels like it could be that, which is worrying coz i'd be leaking g/b oil then? Prefer that still, coz the clutch/cable thing is always a bit hit and miss. Garages never seem to be able to say what it is. They just like to replace it all starting with the cheapest until it's fixed - guess that's all you can do.

Get a haynes manual and a 17mm hexagon socket from halfords. Check the gearbox level yourself. The gearbox level plug will be behind the left hand wheel, its like a hollow hexagon.

I'll prolly have to get over garage tomoz let someome try clutch. Driven BMW for so llong, a mkII clutch is always gonna feel bit crap in comparison.

Is the linkage ok? check the bushes on them as they can break up. Clutch pedal should be light and the gears should engage smoothly.

Hmmm it only starts the gear probs when it is warmed up. I let the guys at nvwc drive it and they didn't think it was internal. They sprayed lots of grease everywhere, opening bits up to do it. Seem to think that might solve it. Can't test that till this evening coz I left it with 'em to fix a heat shield. Trouble is they recon I'm too fussy after driving a bmw but I dunno coz it gets near impossible to get it into gear once it starts the probs.

Anyone in Norwich to see if I am just fussy? :)
