HELP OR ADVICE NEEDED....
« on: 01 February 2006, 15:20 »
Ive got a 97 mk 3,in origional standard condition,The car in mint in every way, with no faults at all,but the last couple of days its been getting on my tits,The gearbox is a pain in the arse,it is hard to engage into gears, and sometimes when you pull up to stop and put it into 1st,a few seconds after hitting the gear theres a loud metal clunk sound coming from the gearbox area????
So does anyone know what it is,could it be the lay shaft,or the selector, syncromesh,or is it just donald ducked??? also will it be expensive??As im contemplating selling the car or swapping it for a motorbike for the summer . thanks in advance for any help.

Have you checked to see if there's any oil in the gearbox? checked for leaks?

If its a problem with the box then yes could be expensive.

If there is a few seconds delay, have you tried doing it immediately? I mean put it in gear and pull away immediately.

If you cant do that and ya get a meshing noise then it could be the syncro.

it seems ok sometimes, but just now and then it plays up,you can be driving down the road going through the gears as normal, and it suddenley starts getting hard to get it into gear, and again occasionally it makes the crunch sound when you drop into first, not always but enough to notice and get on your nerves etc...cant figure it out... :undecided:

It could be any number of things. But it sounds like its not disengaging properly. This could be the clutch fork that is bent or worn or even cracked. Or it could even just be the clutch cable that has stretched!!!.
