Central Locking - Aftermarket Electric
« on: 31 January 2006, 19:20 »
Hi all, i recently put a central lock kit in the car... It works fine with the doors and all is well.

I have soime questions :)

*Is it normal for the locks to get a bit tighter now i have the solenoids on them, or should they stay the same?
*If i want the car to lock/unlock with the alarm, how do i do this? I have two wires on the lock control unit, one for lock, one for unlock... I also have a single wire on the alarm "grounded output when armed" Is this what i do? Does it matter theres only one wore on the alarm, but two on the lock unit?
*How do imake the boot work with a spare solenoid? I dont mean pop open via a switch, i mean simply lock/unlock with the doors? Can it be done, 'cos the boot lock works in a totally different way? Not via a rod, but by turning it? Perhaps a lock from a GTi, or car with central locking is different??

Thanks for all your help :)

1. Yep it will get a little tighter, you can keep fiddling about with em but its very tricky to get it perfect.
2. I'm not sure, I think you need to use relays to make it work, someone should be able to help out with this :)
Though I think some CL mechanisims have a specific set of wires for hooking to an alarm, might be worth checking the wiring diagram!
3. You need a central locking boot mech and lock, as on a boot with CL there is a 3rd key position which activates the boot lock with the central locking, and theres a push/pull rod setup which you can fit your solonoid to :)
You can also do the same thing with the petrol flap, but you need to swap the flap with one from a car with central locking, and you need the CL flap mech from inside the boot.  Look up a recent post by Haribo as he took handy photos of it :)

Thanks for that John :) I thought that the lock would be different somehow!!  Would i be able to keep my existing key though if i swapped the lock mechanism?

I remember the popst by haribo, i did post in it too if you remember  Cos i asked how to do it!. I may have a spare solenoid to do that, so i'll keep a look out for a CL being broken:)

Anyone any ideas with point two? :)

I think you can swap your boot lock onto the CL mech, either that or you'll be able to swap the lock pins into it.  This is something I'll be doing shortly as I've picked up a rust-free tailgate with central locking :)

Sweet, let me know when you do it, and send me some pics if you can?:)
