MK 4 Non Turbo cambelt problem. !!!

Hi All,

My brother-in-law has a problem with his MK IV Non Turbo GTI.

The car is an S Plate 125 BHP version and has done 82,000 miles. It had a cambelt change in Sept 05 and has done about 4,000 miles since.

He went on a 100 mile round trip to day and when he arrived back home there was a very load noise coming from the cambelt area. I've stripped the top cambelt cover off to find an L shaped adjustment bracket loose next to the cambelt tensioner. !!

Does anyone know where I can find photographs of the cambelt layout so I can see what has gone wrong with it. Does any also know if the valves get damged if the cambelt jumps or breaks

sounds like the tool for relieving the cambelt tensioner pressure has been left on your car!!, thats the only l shaped bit i can think off!!! the tensioner pully is 'pushed up by a spring loaded rod' this needs to be wound down for cambelt replacement etc... there is a special tool you can buy or make to do the job. sounds like this could be whats making the racket??

dont use the car till youve got this sorted and checked out as if the cam belt jumps or breaks or if the tensioner failes then youll have a costly bill as valves do hit the pistons and they aint cheap!!

if the tensioner wasnt replaced with the cambelt get it done now... as they are known to fail... along with the guider roller, and the water pump fins break up around the 80k mark so get them done whilst youve got it in bits/having a look..... new engine mount bolts on the mount you have to remove are a must to as they are the stretch variety and can work loose if used again..
