16v's got the shakes- returned today

Hi Guys,

since replacing the mounts on my 16v  my car seems to shake quite a lot on cold start up, and when i mean alot , i mean alot, somedays i think its going to fall apart ;-)

i've checked the mount installation over and over again and everything seems fine from underneath, any idea whats gone wrong could i have pulled anything apart when jacking the engine up to get the mounts in, my exhaust also feels & sounds like its blowing.....its doing that bub bub bub noise going on idle?

any help would be greatly appreciated?

You may have damaged your exhaust if you have jacked the engine up too much. Start your engine from cold and get your hands all over the manifold and downpipe and see if you can feel where its blowing from. Which mount did you change? I would also check the bushes on the frame that the mount sits on too.

1st thing to do is check your tyre pressures, the free fixes are always worth doing
You may also need to get your alignment redone if the old mounts were really bad?

I changed all 3 engine mounts, I've never seen or heard of these mount bushes does anyone have a pic?

the shakes are only on idle at standstill, with the car idleing bank on 1000rpm, i must say that when warm the car doesnt feel as rough

when you put the gearbox mounting bracket back on what way did you put the bolts in

im taking about the 2 bolts that bolt onto the gearbox itself. if you put them in back to front they will rub on the chassis

the bolts go though the bracket from right to left if your looking from the front of the car to the back.............. so i don't think they are rubbing.

well winters on its way back, with it has returned my engine shaking on start up, even though revs are sat on 1K , any ideas ?

what adjustments can a garage make to fuel/air mixture, just thinking maybe i got something funky going on here,

you may just need the co setup correctly. There is a how to in the mk2 child board. Although if the revs are at 1k i dont think it will be that, could you not pop the bonnet and watch to see whats moving so much?

thining about it , its not really a shake more of a vibration, and  all my car vibrates 

it feels a lot worse sitting in the drivers seat than the looking through the bonnet and trying find out what,

 as anyone ever had there downpipe crack near the spring bit,( i cant see that it has by the way) i'm just wondering if there was a crack a  drone from that could be causing vibrations?

I'm only a girl and don't know much technically speaking, but have driven and tinkered with a few - my valver had a similar problem and it about drove me mad! It had a split plug cap - on the end of the HT lead and the spark was shorting out and it felt like a washing machine full of boulders! - once warmed up it improved, but it did take a while to find, it didn't seem to be missfiring as such and the injectors were working overtime trying to compensate for the wierd messages they were getting!!

Might not be the same at all but it certainly made my car shake about when cold and standing.

good luck - at least you've still got yours to tinker with - mine has moved on today to another home - my health is too ropey to risk a 15 year old car leting me down, or more to the point the earache from the family saying "you should get a newer one, you'll never cope if it stops in the middle of nowhere" - Had to admit they were right - very bitter pill to swallow!
