I am a long term Ebayer and see no evidence on phantom bidding here. All the bidders have decent credibility and are clearly VW nuts (look at their history)

Why do you think it is Phantom?

This car is probably one of a very small number this original. Throw all your price guides out of the window - it will sell to hte person who wants it most (and can afford it) - its not as thought there are 5 others for sale if you don't get this one.

BTW- Much as I like it, think 7k for a red 8v is a bit mad. Metallic 16v with leather & lots of options would be a diff story

We are all VW nuts and would be curious to see what out limits are when bidding for such a miniter,  he does say he is a collector and if he is he may have friends bidding on it,  yes i agree with the last post some of the bidding is genuine enough but the 1st 3 or 4 are a bit dubious, the car itself is an absoulte gem but as the last post stated for that kind of dough i'd be lloking for a G60 spec with similiar miles,  full leather etc etc.
The buyer who gets this will find it hard to get a full return on his/her ivestment other than showing the car,  this car is for the Vw hardcore nut who wants a prestige vehicle for Sunday driving and an odd show,  christ i'm jealous already.

I picked my Mk2 gti up 3 years ago with 28k from new in the same condition with the same credentials; it’s now done 50k but still has that ‘new’ feel to it. I say it’s worth the extra to experience the closest you can get to a new Mk2 gti (mine cost 4k btw)

Has anyone actually viewed this car. I e-mailed the seller on January 30th requesting a view. He replied on the same day asking for my telephone number and I am still waiting for a call (5 days have now passed). I actually posted on this site that I was planning to view the car and report back to you guys after I viewed it. It is possible the seller is quite happy with the bids, however, I am a bit worried that he has not got in touch to offer me a view. What do you guys think?

Does seem a bit weird that mate. I mean for the sake of a phone call, maybe he'll get someone else in a bidding war and make more money. If I was you and I really wanted to see the car, I'd bombard him with e-mails.

Probably because it is on nearly 7k and that was with 5 days to go. Smacks of getting people to bid it up for him tbh.

I actually think there must be some other reason. Why does he not want me to see the car? Read my earlier post about feeding back to this forum. I might be totally off the mark but why does he not want me to view the car. Obviously the car is a few years old but he is appealling to those amongst us with a sense of nostalgia and who might be inclined to spend some silly money on a trip down memory lane. If the car is viewed in the cold light of day it might knock a sense of realism into the viewer as it might have a blemish or two here and there that does not quite match up to the image of what we are looking for.

Totally agree with last post,  Chancer maybe ,Genuine Maybe,  But if i got £7K for a Mk 2 i would'nt let any other Vw nut view it and spoil the bid?  Questions still have to be asked?? :undecided: :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

Agree with last comment. Probably bombarded with emails (over 10000 page hits) and happy with price. Doesn't want to jeopardise the sale at that price. I can understand that, as whoever views the car will be expecting a NEW car due to the bidding being at £7k and the hysteria this has created - perhaps that is unrealistic, the original advert did say there were a 'few marks' - in fact you can see scuffs on the plastic bumpers. A VW concours nut may take offence by that!!

7k for a red 8v seems a lot, but that is the great thing about Ebay, it sets the price for one-offs. That would pay for 2 years depreciation on the Mk5 I am considering!

i could not see myself spending that much on a mk2 unless i had a very large disposable income.

im thinking of polishing my one up and clocking it back, get a new empty book stamp it up a bit get a new MOT for it.. and wa hey.... low mileage golf...
