Headlights not working

Not all the time, but sometimes I only have sidelights - then for no apparent reason the headlights come on - not a fuse in other words. Is this a common one? Is there a simple place to look for a fix. Thanks all.

There are no relays for the lights
First thing I'd do is swap in another headlight switch. But beware the early MK2s had a different switch which will not work in your car, just check the switch you try has the same number of pins as the one fitted to your car

had exactly the same problem a while back. totally baffled me. in the end i found it was a loose connection on the back of the indicator switch/stalk. check that!

Thanks both - I will give it a go. Bulbs and headlight wiring are all fine I know that.
