Dodgy ciggy lighter socket

Is it common for these things to be a bit tempremental? Plugged my phone charger in earlier and it worked fine.

Went into a shop, came out, put the phone back on charge and it was ok for about 5 seconds then just stopped charging. Tried my PSP and sat nav chargers too and neither would work.

How much of the dash has to be ripped apart to get to the back of it so i can check the connections and swap it out if need be? I couldn't really see earlier as it was dark.

Before you rip the dash out, have you checked the fuse for the ciggy lighter? Might save some heartache. But it should work at all times, not being tempremental you know. German technology you see
