HELP! Mk3 caliper conversion on Mk2 GTi
« on: 27 January 2006, 01:12 »
Hi,

Understood that Mk3 capipers would fit Mk2 and give benefit of not seizing - result!

Have bought the calipers, but they do not appear to fit very well......

Do you have to change anything else like discs or pads? Or, do you need additional brackets?

Would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks,

Martin

Your better off changing your disks and pads at the same time. New wheel bearings too as they sit inside the disk

they should bolt on all versions of the mk2 gti's afaik...

it was the handbrake cable which was the problem on the <90 spec mk2s...?

I've heard some rear calipers are 'upside down' i.e. bleed nipple at the bottom rather than the top, try em the other way round ;)

Oh and just to clarify, you want the late MK3 calipers as the early ones are the same as MK2.  The way you tell is you check for a handbrake spring, if you can see one they're the old type.  The ones you want have the spring inside and so dont sieze :)

The handbrake cables changed on the MK2 around 87-88ish, you'll need the late type.  The h/brake lever also changed about this time, I've heard some say the late cables are a straight swap, and some say you can't fit em unless you change the h/brake lever as well!

Thanks chaps.

My cars is an 87/D Gti 16v - a real early one...

I will check if I have the correct Mk3 calipers - may have been supplied with the early ones.

Cheers,

Martin
