worried, please help
« on: 24 January 2006, 13:38 »
Yesterday on the motorway I ran out of petrol and had to call out the AA. The thing is, when I set off I had a 1/4 of a tank and its not far at all to where I work. About 7 miles. So I didn't even bother checking if my petrol was low during the journey. I was so scared! It suddenly lost power and was juddering. Anyway after the AA man put me to shame, I put £15 worth of petrol in and today on the way to work I could practically see the needle going down! So what I want to know is if it could be possible that my car is using too much fuel? Any ideas? Please help I don't want to run out again I was so scared all by myself on the hard shoulder!!

the only thing i can suggest is get it set up properly, a tune etc but to me it doesnt sound like its using to much fuel, coz u shouldnt be able to see the fuel gage moving, is there a leak anywhere, tank or fuel pump for example?

No leaks and I forgot to say I recently had all the petrol piped replaced because of a leak.

If that was me I'd fill the tank up and see what happens and keep an eye on it, the reason I say this is because my fuel gauge moves about quite a lot when it's running low, as in, one minute it's on a 1/4, then it's over, then if I go round a corner or up an hill it then goes into the red etc etc. The only real way to check how much fuel there is in your tank is to see what the gauge reads on the flat, either with the engine running or with the ignition on. The upshot of this is that it may move slightly when it's running around the 1/4 tank mark, most cars do anyway.

 I'm loosing loads of petrol at the moment cos the pipe going from the fuel pump to accumulator is rotten and i cant find anywhere that does them (anyone know where to get one - help )

Can you smell petrol inside or outside the car? petrol stinks so if its leaking you wont be able to miss it  :nerd:

You say you've had pipes fitted, ((which ones (see above )) its possible they havent been fitted properly or one of the new pipes could be dodgy - i'd definately take it back and get them to check over everything they've done

Yeah Crazyquiff is good for bits and bobs, I just got a really rare part from him! Can't smell petrol but wondered if my car could be using too much petrol for some reason?
