'special equipment' 1988 Golf GTI 8v info
« on: 20 May 2003, 15:49 »
hello,
i bought a 1988 golf GTI 8v yesterday - i think its a 'special equipment' model as it is oak green metallic and has 7 spoke alloys, central locking, electric windows, 16v (red/black) rear lights, and green tint glass, the interior is grey with coloured striped in middle.

just after any information on this model as i have scoured the net and there isnt a lot or any pics etc..

also what injection system would this use, are there only cosmetic changes?
should an SE GTI have any extra badging ?

any info would be great, thanks.

Just sounds like the first owner wanted ALL the options they could get when they bought it.

Your Golf is a limited edition Mk2 Campaign.

It celebrated the 10 millionth Golf being produced.

There is absolutely no information about this limited edition on the Internet. I know because I've tried looking for it. It doesn't help that any search needs to contain the word Campaign and every Mk1 website then pops up.

The most you can find is a paragraph in the history of the Golf. Which is deeply annoying.

As a fellow Campaign owner feel free to ask any questions.

Aye, what you have is a campaign. Like tinman i have been able to find very little informatio on these cars and all i know is that they came in 3 colours, had 'rainbow' interior and came with the 7 spoke estoril alloys!! I have been told that there arent any about tho so worth hanging on to probably!

The alloys are Le Castellet (or something similar - it was only yesterday that I found out that its a racing track that Williams (cough spit) are testing at this week).

The alloys are getting rare now. Although I was fortunate to pick up a spare set quite recently - the cost - 200 quid including a Golf Driver, and 20 quid to put new (old) wheels on the Driver so the council would take it away.

Before anyone sheds a tear - it would of failed the MOT.

The interior (if you need replacement bits) can be found on late 91 16v models, which is useful.

On a general note, I am trying to determine how many Campaigns there were.

I remember reading somewhere that:

(this is where memory fails me and its one or tother)

a) there were 5,000 built in total, 1250 was 16v which was the ratio of 8v to 16v. Of the 5000, 1000 came to the UK.

b) 5000 came to the UK.

Either way, Campaigns are becoming rare.

At Inters two weeks ago - the most interesting part of the show for us (and this sounds very strange) was  the car park.

We counted 4 Ralleyes, 3 G60s but only 1 Campaign. Strangely enough we saw 2 fake Campaigns!

The reason we found the car park interesting was because you saw real cars and not the fluffy creations in the trade show part.

(We liked the concours - you will see a Campaign there next year  ;)).

Regards,
Justin

BTW, oak green as far as we can tell is the most rare colour.

cool, sounds like i may have something pretty good - check out the pics let me know if it is a gen campaign - the bloke i bought him off said it was a campaign but as u said when i searched net all campaigns i found were mk1's! so i thought the next similar sounding model was the special equipment one that was mentioned on some of the sites. i thought he may have got his models mixed up, perhaps not so.

if they work theres some pics. it has had 16v badges put on it by a previous owner which i would like to remove - did campaigns have different badging? forgive me for my lack of knowledge on golfs, i'm a mini person! sold my 1985 sooped up mini last friday bought a more sensible motor with 5 gears and bootspace! i still have a 1970 mini clubman which is my project and takes priority over the golf - which is why i have no intention of 'modifying' anything on this golf (probably good if its a rare model :D )

if anyone has any pics or info on campaigns i can be contacted @ george.houghton@hmce.gsi.gov.uk

much appreciated.

Yup, its a Campaign.

I see what you mean about the 16v badges. They also put the beesting on it as well which was definitely 16v only.

The strange thing is that they made it look like a 16v but didn't lower the suspension to complete the job. From the photo graphs it still looks like the 8v ride height.

Campaigns don't have any special badging.

nice, so have you got any other information about campaigns? i better take those 16v badges off - the bee sting has gotta stay though cos there'll be a hole :-/

are the electric windows and alarm (which has been disconnected) standard fit for a campaign? i'll take some pics of the rest of the car after work.

are the extra's only cosmetic - do campaigns use the standard 8v lump?

u got any pics of yours?

thanks.
