Self adjusting clutch probs.
« on: 13 November 2003, 20:48 »
Hi

I've got a 1986 golf with a self adjusting clutch, the problem is that almost on every journey whilst I've got my foot on the clutch pedal, I feel a 'click' through the pedal, and when realising the clutch the biting point is almost instant!
This also sometimes happens when I'm just releasing the clutch, and all of a sudden its fully engaged!!
This has been quite frightning on several occasion, and has nearly caused an accident on a few occasions.

Can anyone help? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanx

Steve

Sounds like your self adjusting cable has gone pete tong. replace the cable and see what happens.

Is that easy to change on the self adjust?
Do you know if the adjustment mechanism is inside the cable?
Had a look at euro car parts web page, and they only list a standard cable for around 8 quid, but I'll call them tomorrow, and see if they do any others.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!

Changing the cable is quite easy, use the strap provided to compress the spring on the gearbox end of the cable.
