My steering
« on: 15 January 2006, 15:58 »
Hiya peeps.

got a bit of a rattle and tramliming going on with mk mk2 non power assisted driver, i am changing all the bushes to polybushes as i thought it was this,

but i also read the following and thought this may be the cause of the rattle,

"The rack and pinion steering gear is located behind the engine and the transaxle. This location protects the steering gear from weather and from damage in all but the most severe collisions. Neither the steering gear nor the tie rod ends require lubrication during their normal service lives. Although there is an adjusting screw on the steering gear, adjustment is not necessary unless the steering either rattles, or is stiff and does not self-center"

read it on the bently online manual site, anyone know where this adjustment screw is, and if it would help??

Thanks, Warren.

Quote from Haynes:
Manual
1 If there is any undue slackness in the steering gear which results in noise or rattles, then the steering gear should be adjusted as follows (see illustration).
2 Raise and support the vehicle at the front end on axle stands (see “Jacking and vehicle support”).
3 With the wheels in the straight-ahead position, tighten the self-locking adjustment screw by approximately 20°.
4 Lower the vehicle to the ground then road test the vehicle. If the steering fails to self-centre after cornering, loosen the adjustment screw a fraction at a time until it does.
5 If, when the correct self-centring point is reached, there is still excessive wear in the steering, retighten the adjuster nut a fraction
to take up the play.
6 If the above adjustment procedure does not provide satisfactory steering adjustment, then it is probable that the steering gear is worn beyond an acceptable level and it must be removed and overhauled.

Ok peeps, did as instructed, steering just got stiffier, but the rattle remained, interestingly, i had the from wheels on the ground, dead centre was pretty loose still, everything either side was really stiff, so to me it suggests that it would be that, rather than track rod ends or anything, which seemed fine when i looked anyways.

Does anyone else feel really uneasy being under a car? even when its on axle stand
