on front  there are 1 bolt at top ,2 at bottom very easy to take off
dont forget brake pipes need takeing off the strut and abs wire.make sure you wd 40 all nuts before.
dont forget that you will have to have camber ajusted when you put the new ones back on or your tyres will wear out quickly.approx £60. make sure you put new vw top mounts on front as the old ones wear out and knock.
back struts are easy 1 bolt at top 1 at bottom, make sure you jack car up at back as far as you can so you can get stut off as they are a pain to get out from under arch so what i did is put your spring clamps on the springs before you take the struts off and compress the springs as much as possible then this gives you more  room to move strut ,also make sure when you put your new struts on you put the nuts and spacers back right and tighten them all until they stop or you will get knocking when driveing,
also when tightening all nuts on top of all struts you might have to hold the chrome damper with mole grips as the hole damper spins when you tighten the nuts up some times.
have fun

I done this last year on my last mk3, do as above, but make sure you change the top mounts on the fronts, I did, but get genuine ones, cos i made the mistake and got GFS ones and they were S**T
Just knocked all day long, no matter how tight they were!
Thought you would like to know.  good luck.
