« on: 13 January 2006, 17:51 »
hiya everybody,
right so tomorrow i am gonna do this -   http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=31838;prev_next=next     as my heater is still non-existant but my problem is i had a quick peek today and i cant see the level of the coolant at all in the expansion tank. is there any other way of seeing the level of coolant cos my tank is so grubby i dont think im ever gonna see it on the tank.

best thing to clean it with is to stick it in a sink full of clothes washing liquid or powder and scrub it with a bottle cleaner.

if your emptying the coolant anyway, just fill it up to the top mark with your cap off and as the air gets flushed out keep an eye on it (as the cap is off) and just top it up as necessary. once the air has bled out and the water gets hot it should be sitting around the top mark. if its too low just top it up a bit. then put the cap back on...... or spend £6 and get a nice new one!

oh ok so can get the whole tank out? i tried scrubbing the outside but still couldnt see anything. maybe leave it in bleach for a bit? i guess it might end up having to be a new one because it is very grubby, dont know if it will clean anymore.
thanks

yeah just unplug the two hoses and the level sensor unscrews, then you just yank it upwards its dirty on the inside from rust and crap in your coolant system....

yeah never hurts to do it, it should be done quite frequently. so buy some proper coolant flush and do it properly, you'll be amazed at the colour of the water and crap that falls out if you haven't done it before.
take off as many hoses as you can and flush a hose in the block to clear out as much as you can. do this before you clean the expansion tank too.

yeah rubjohnny i looked but not sure where the line inside corresponds to the levels outside.
no i havnt done the golfs coolant before, sure its gonna be full off crap - should have seent the lumps in the oil when i did that few weeks ago. rekon i'll jus stick the hose in every hole i can find then try cleaning tank.
cheers guys

is it the round one or the earlier odd shaped one?  If its the round one the max mark lines up with the water just up to the top of the 'funnel' inside the coolant tank.  You'll know what I mean when you look.  If its the early one, its just under the bottom of the filler neck.
Easiest way forward is to spend £10 on a new un really :)
