Proposed purchase of a Mark 1 GTI
« on: 13 January 2006, 16:32 »
Hello All

When i get my finances straight and my lock up is finished being built I want to get a loan out for about 2 grand and get a mark 1 GTI. Was just looking for advice on how much i should spend on a fairly nice one, not a show car but tidy none the less. Was thinking around £1500, does this seem realistic? I would prefer a 1.8 campaign but did these all come in mars red as i would prefer a black one, but not too fussy about colour (not Mars red as my mate has one in that colour) or engine

P.s were the 1.8's all campaign models or did they make a normal 1.8 GTI?

thanks in advance
Neaty

Neaty, £1500 should easily see you get a decent mk1, for a show winner/concourse you are looking at 3k+ up to whatever. The campaigns weren't all red they did them in several colours, basically the campaign was a run out "special" edition to get rid of all the bits before the mk2 came out, very early mk1s were 1.6 but later ones were all 1.8. There's some top guides about mk1s here so have a look and there's even info on what to look for in a campaign version etc. Have a looksy here our kid --> http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/
......now officially dubless.

You are getting about as obsessed as me. I have a valver, a campaign and a cabbie. You will not regret buying a Mk1. They are real fun. If you drive them week about as I do then you start to miss the one you are not using. The Mk1 feels like  go cart and the valver feels refined and modern.

You just pick the car to suit your mood at any given time

^^^ i am getting carried away with all these cars!

I have My Valver which now looks like this until my 40ft X 40ft lock up is built and i can get it in there and sorted!

and my Scirocco which by the way is doing my nut in!! wont run despite the brand new weber replacement, K&N, new plugs and dizzy cap and rotar arm:

(thats my signiture on the scirocco forum by the way)

and then i think my dad is going to be after a new car after summer so will give me his mark 3 gti 8valve.
so that leaves me with 4!!

So i think i will just swallow my pride and cut my losses and get rid of the rocco!

providing i can get a loan the mark 1 is definate!!
