Ryder probs!

last night i was driving and the car started to loose power at about 3k revs again  :angry:. it woudl go any more then i had to pull over and wait for abit and restart the engine and then it was totally fine. i have changed the vacuum hoses in the carb and also got new spark plugs. would any1 knw what it could be? please.

also when i brake sometimes the left front wheel locks up and it starts to skid  :huh: . When the car went for an MOT recently the guy said that either the shock is weak or the top mount needs changing, but i dont see how this is making the wheel lock up and skid?

I dont really know anything about carbs but could it be icing? This would explain why its alright if you leave it for a bit then restart as its had a chance to warm up from the engine heat and de-ice.

As for the locking wheel. 1st thing to do would be to bleed your whole brake system. This will ensure that each wheel is getting the correct equal pressure. If your still getting the problem then check the brake caliper, pads, brake hose/line, tyre and disk on the side that isnt locking up.

Thats well dodgy if the wheel locks on one side!! Yeah bleed the system and then try it.  :undecided:

What sort of driving were you doing? Fast/slow/dual carriageway?? Also what was the weather like? It tends to car-ice when the weathers damp, or a few degrees, though, strangely, not when its "really" cold :S

well it was late last nite on country roads. is there anyway to get rid of the carb icing?? where abts does it occur  :undecided:

I found it used to ocur when driving faster, ie dual carriageways n stuff. Mostly when it was damp/foggy, but not when it was really cold.

I put a bit of elephant tubing from the cold air intake to the exhaust manifold, which warmed the cold air up a bit, and helped. Recently my garage told me to mod the airbox a bit, such that the flap is always in the hot position, by using a screw. He told me it pretty much cured carb icing, and that even in idsummer in traffic, it still wont overheat! So, i gave it a go, and it certainly does help! It does take a bit longer to warm up though... but i drove in fog, and it didnt even splutter :) this pleased me! it has stalled once or twice, but only when its been cold, and i havent warmed it up fully, as the air intake will obviously still be cold!

cheers m8, ill hav to do dat, but ds is a stupid question, how did u mod the air box and where is this flap??  :huh:. im also missing that pipe bit the goes from the air box to the exhaust manifold and plus i havent got that metal bit that screws ova the manifold.

The manifold cover is like £8 from VW or something cheap like that... less than £10 for sure!

Number one is the cold air pipe that i mentioned, it has to be ziptied to the other pipe or something, as theres nothing for it to attach to!

Number 2 is the airbox, and needs to be removed to do the mod. The thing in the circle is the flap location, if you look carefully, you should see that the hot pipe is the bottom part - to the right of the diagonla line, and the top part - left of the line, is the cold air. Simply push the flap down into the hot position, and put something in there to make it stay there! I used a screw on the outside. It'll prob need 2 of you though ;)

I suppose its obvious, but you only need to do one of these... If you mod the airbox, then the cold air intake is useless...
