hi guys and girls been a while since ive been on but as always i look to you guys for the desperate info cos i have no doubt that one of you will know the answer to my question
so here we go
i have abs on my mk3 and up until now i have had zero problems
but recently the light started to flicker on and of every now and again (especially after a long drive)
now the light just doesnt go out
i know my pads and disc need replacing due to wear
but is there something more sinister going on
any ideas people
or is this gonna cost me a small mortgage

Hello vdub buddy :wink:  the abs system is a very exspensive thing when it goes wrong, as I just found out.
First, just to let you know, get the abs codes read and that's a start, then this will tell you if there is a fault, sensor, wiring, or even the pump! this can be done at most big garages, but make sure you see them do it, as they might say it's something when it's not, as some garages (as we all know well) :lipsrsealed:  can con us into spending money when it's nothing at all.
 I have a fault with my abs, and found out on the readings (done at AMD in Bicester) it's the main pump, and thats exspensive £370 recon, and even when that's done, there might be a sensor gone, but if yours is a sensor on one of the wheels, exspect to pay £65 -£80 for one.
 I've had to resort to leaving mine, for now and live with no abs, which isn't a problemr to me.
 just disconnect it, and take the warning bulb out.

oh, has anyone got a working, ABS pump :smiley: going cheap?

And please dont just take the pissing bulb out of the ABS light and hope the probs go away :angry:

I bought my car and later found out the ABS bulb had been removed :angry: This practise is criminal and just downright nasty :angry: And basically, a bodge.  Do you realy want to drive around in a bodged up and dangerous car?????

Get your Abs sorted , if you have ABS that has failed then you wont have any brake balance between the front and back .

Poly , if you are near london i can read the fault codes for you . I think you have a failing sensor a similar thing happened to me , and the fault code first came up as intermittent and then it failed completely .

Never scrimp on brakes

my abs pump is fooked.  :cry:  there is a place near poole in Dorset that will recon them apparently  :undecided: £450 new from ECP. at the moment i've got one from a seat toledo fitted. the abs light is still on aswell as the ahndbrake light. from what i understand that may be down to the main ecu not recognising the seat unit? the brakes are very unbalanced as i found uout on a roundabout yesterday whne the back end tried to come past the front .  :shocked:

just phoned BBA reman and they say that the ecu can be replaced separately and would be £200 inc vat and carridge, still sucks but not £450

I have now found that the bulb has been taken out by prevous owner, and the code reading says 'abs pump fault' so I now need to know if this is the main problem.
 I think the car is fine with the abs not working, and it brakes fine and equal to all wheels, but is this this ok long term?  it went though the m.o.t ok with it like this,
whats the next step?  my best mate who is a machanic, and very clued up on Golf, he said get the pump, BIG £Â£Ã‚£, and see if it work, if not then what. Don't wonna spend £370 on a recon, and fine it to be something else. this is bugging me now :angry:

i wouldn't but a second hand one. the (free ) one i have from the seat has the same part number as the original but my ecu wont recognise it. getting and expert out tomorrow to have a look with a proper diagnostic tester rather than just my fault code reader. if the worst comes to the worst it'll be a whole new pump if not
