Rev counterand other problems on 16v, please help!
« on: 09 January 2006, 20:01 »
hi

i have owned my mk2 16 valver to nearly a year now and still thinks its the  best gti drivers car, it runs like a dream, but i have some very minor niggles and wonder if you guys can help...

1/ My rev counter is very intermittant at mo, i.e it sometimes works then stops , or then has a dikky fit and all over the place , is this a common fault, is the cable just loose or something more sinister..beacuse of this problem my mpg readings are all over the place! currently i am doing 65 mpg, anyone beat that!?

2/ My front fog lamp in bumper needs changing-simple job i thought  :smug:, WRONG!! you can only disconnect lamp from behind the bumper and not the front and unless you can get it on a ramp, you cant get under to see what you are doing! is there a trick?

3/ My fuel flap keeps flapping open on left hand corners, very annoying!, where the flap shuts onto the body there is a  peg on flap, there is a rubber grommet for peg  to shut onto, now i have that replacement grommet, but am bu**ered if i can see how you get it into hole! Sounds silly i know but the only way it will fit in is by gaining access behind fuel filler area , and that is nigh on impossible! any ideas?

1. rev counter signal comes from the coil. check the coil wiring and earthing

mph, mpg etc (nothing to do with the rev counter signal) it works of a vacuum pipe running into the back of the clocks

2. buy a jack & axle stand. there is no easy way

3. the rubber surround on the filler cap pulls out & off. just gently prise it out by pulling it towards you - that will give you all the access you need

To do the fog lamp bulb you have to get on your back underneath, it is just about possible to do it without jacking up but its a nightmare!  The cap on the back simply twists & pops off, but be carefull I've had 2 units break on me down my local scrappy!

If the flap opens its likly to be the spring that is missing, or the flap itself is deformed.  I've had both problems on my GTI & Driver, I had to replace the entire flap as some muppet had bent it open too far.

The flap seems to be ok, but there is definately a hole next to fuel cap for this rubber grommet to go, i have tried to peel back the rubber neck behind cap, but there is still a metal panel preventing access to the hole...

i would attach pic but not how to do it on here!

anyone have any ideas?

The hole isn't anything to do with it, its there for the flap locking mech if you have central locking, on non-cl cars its simply blanked off :)
