I had 17" on my last golf, and they looked great, but remember when you come to buying new tyres, then ent cheap for a good set of 17's. I'm looking at alloys at the mo, and I'm going for 15" this time, only because I think the car will sit to high on 17's, but i might lower it yet. and being lowered on 15's it should sit qiute nice, that euro look as they say in the vdub crowd!
 Is yours lowered?

mines lowered 40mil on 17s and the wheels fit nicely under the arches. Also with not havin lowered it stupid amounts the ride isnt too bad.

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

mines dropped 60mm on 17's, you shud be fine with them as long as you dont go over a  7 'n' 1/2in wide rim.........

Watch the width!!!

I have 17x8's with 215x40 tyres and there is a slight fouling problem on the rear.

So go for 7 or 7.5 wide wheels with 205 wide tyres. Should be no problem then.

I've got 7.5x16's and I get some scrubbing on the rear (lowered 60mm), only very minor though, just needs a simple arch adjustment.

I'd go for 17's, unless you lower it a lot 16's can still look lost in the arches!
