vw golf 1.4/1.6 s 2000
« on: 08 January 2006, 16:18 »
I absolutely love golfs! gotta get that out of the way!

I have been saving for well the dawn of time and have looked at all kinds of cars and one I can afford is the vw golf 1.4s or the 1.6 s both are the 1.6 one I looked at is in the 16 v model. Which I'm quite keen on.

Its a standard model (35k on the clock) is reflec silver. comes with free mats woohoo  no tax but mot and no service  and the asking is £5995 and its from a dealer. Now I could probably find a cheaper car in private adds but this has a HPI report and a RAC inspection report. Its valeted too :)

I was wondeirng what should I look out for when buying this car?

do you tihnk they are asking too much ?

I'm very wet behind the ears about this and would appreciate any tips and guideance.

Basially over the next few years I want to tinker with it pgrade bits and bobs etc.

Cheers

Seems like a lot of money to me. If you did end up going for it you should definately get them to tax and service it. HPI and RAC check would'nt cost too much to do on a private sale. You did'nt say what year the car is, but nearly £6k is alot of money. Also if you could insure it, that sort of money would get you into Turbo or 1.8 20Valve territory.

as Stu said a lot of money for what is a very slow car compared to the diesel's and 1.8Ts etc etc -

and for that money I'd definately want it to be Taxed & MOTD plus a service to make sure its in top nick.

for that money you could easily get a GTI or TDI with more toys and performance.  Or is insurance a big factor in the engine you are hoping to get??

edit - just seent he 200o in the topic title!!!!!! is it a 2000 plate?? blimey then stay away!! they should be around the 4K mark!!!!!! low mileage or note!!

Just realised you put the year of the car in the title!..D'oh.

I did a quick search on the Autotrader website. found the following if you need low insurance:

1) 2002 1.4s 51,000 miles FSH etc, etc      £5,400.00 (still think thats expensive!!)
2) 2002 1.4s 41,000 miles "             "        £5,500.00

and if you use the money you save buying private, and not paying salesmans wages you could get
a 2001 2.0 GTI with all the kit (climate, centre armrest CD player etc) 36,000 £5,950.

Keep on looking around if I were you.

the 1.6 8 valve is pants. I had a new Bora with this engine and i couldn't wait to get rid of it. Slow, but worst of all very thirsty - more so than the 1.8T.

By all accounts the 1.6 16v is a better engine. I would rather have a 1.4 than the old 1.6. The 1.4 is low power, but at least it is a nice 'revvy' unit.

Hi,

Apologies for the late response,

I managed to pick up a 2001 1.6s 16v 2001 golf for £5300 with 51k. they kicked in a HPI check, 11 months MOT 6 months tax. nice condition. Very happy with the car runs well cant complain.

Now I really want to get to grips with the car starting with the simplest things getting it how I like it etc.

It came with standard wheels ... I was thinking of some alloys but as usual haven't got a clue what type size ... I would need for this car   :embarassed: or even where they sell em'

But enjoying the car going back to driving for enjoyment as oposed driving to just get somewhere.

What is was all about when I started driving was just for enjoyment.
