i love VAG engine sharing - starting problems
« on: 05 January 2006, 21:42 »
hi guys.

i own a 1985 Audi 80 Sport - the Golf Mk2's big cousin.  Its a 1781cc 8valve motor, using the K-Jet ignition system - except Audi put the engine in the right way around!

Just kidding - the bigger bonnet is an arse to park!

I use www.audifans.net and www.quattroforums.com a bit - the problem is there arent that many 80Sport's about but there are a few GTi's still about so I've decided to try out my engine issues here.  Who knows i may even have a few pearls of wisdom for you lot (but I doubt it- youve probalby come across it before I have!)

My problem is a starting problem.  When i start the Sport in the mornings, it starts beautiful, turn of the key.  when i stop then immediatly, then start the enigne it loves it too.  (HOT HOT HOT starting)
If however the car has been started earlier that day she doesnt like starting until about 2 lots of 10 seconds of cranking, sometime more, and only with full throttle stomp (releasing just b4 it catches). - i.e. any kind of "warm" start.

Ive changed most bits over the time ive had it, set the timing up on numerous occasions, to no avail.
I have my suspicions what it MIGHT be, but just dont know.  Heres some ideas left to chalk off:

Cold start valve stuck/broke in some way.
Leak in the rubber inlet manifold.
Auxilarily air device?

I do have other issues - but lets take this one step at a time!

Anyway any advice appreciated,  im hoping this is a well used forum as i love chatting about all things VAG, not just the problems with them, and the older the car the better!!

Look forward to chatting,

Can start out by checking any of the vacuum lines, if its good to start up first thing then it might just be a case of the cold start valve being a bit dirty, or possibly old so needs replacing.

I'm a bit confused though by this bit...

Do you mean cold starting it is fine, or hot starting

cold starting is good. hot starting is great (re-starting within 2 minutes of switching engine off)

anything in between is bad.

Could be a very tempermental hall sender in the dizzy, i know audis had a problem with just losing all the power completely at random and then being fine. The same for starting. Might be worth just taking it to a garage and get them to diagnostic check it. Shouldn't cost more than 10-20 quid.

nice car by the way slick. i like the rims.

unfortunatly the engine cant be diagnosed - its Bosch K-Jetronic therefore no ECU on it. (if thats the kind of diagnosis you mean - or do i have the wrong end of the stick?)

cheers for your continued help,

cheers for the comments matey.

Just had another thought, i know that sometimes the gears were a bit iffy on them, so it might be worth depending on whether it is an auto or not.

If its an auto just push the lever down and see if it fires, if its a manual put it into first and wiggle it towards the front of the car, sometimes the gears did not engage and it would just sit there turning over but not holding the ignition spark because of the gears not spining.

Do everything you can to clean out the air and fuel system.

Clean out the airbox and its sensors

Take off the big retaining clip where the cold air intake meets the engine and clean everything out with loads of spray in carb cleaner.

Stick a couple of cans of flush through via the fuel tank.

Probably sounds really obvious,  but best to elimate the "dirt" aspect before you go replacing bits.
