having changed a hell of a lot on my mk3 2.0 8v n spent an awful lot of money to try n stop it cutting out n al emphasise the word TRY.Guess what still doing it ave done absolutely everything that has been mentioned n aint cured it.After it cuts out sounds like it aint sparking on first attempt to start it then it starts splutters n dies.replaced wiring for coil cos for some unknown reason it decided to melt.due to having a over sophisticted alarm wen it cuts out sometimes a have to leave my ignition lights on cos if a dont car immobilieres itself n wont start.wen the lights are left on after it cuts out it will not start for the life of it.if lights r off n  car is left to cool down starts only to cut out 5 mins later.Not only being a pain in the arse for nearly 6 mth it has become dangerous at times,specially wen ya in outside lane n it dies.yesterday it took is hour n half to do 4 mile journey after cutting out 13 times yes thats right 13 times!! :angry: . me is thinking my golf gti ownership is coming to sorry a end a few weeks times n a think a will never even contimplate thinking about owning anuther vw ever.has been the worst most unreliable car ave owned n ave owned some bad ones. :undecided:wen car cuts out it clicks behind the top vents in dash,then wen ya try to start if it clicks it wont start anyone know whats behind there a thought it might of been the built in immobilliserjus dont know but definately clciks then dies

So does you car start and run when cold but decides to cut out one its warm? If so id suggest that its something electrical to do with the ignition. Possibly something like the ignition amplifier.

Does exactly that yes runs okish sometimes wen its cold then soon as it gets warm its cut out time.sometimes which has been happening lately oil light flashes plenty of oil in tho. :undecided:.its getting serious now tho cos its starting to really do my head in wen ya cant even do a 2 mile journey having to leave early to go to places cos ya know whats gonna happen.just want to get to bottom of it ya know

so where is this ignition amplifier thing is it part of the ignition switch will a have to change switch too??

Sorry i have no idea where it is or even if it exists on this motor. I just know the same thing used to happen to me on my little pug 205 and thats what it was. I think that its built into the coil, so id change that 1st. Plus you did say the coil wiring burnt out, it probably damaged the coil too.
