will it ever run properly?
« on: 01 January 2006, 19:51 »
1600mk2 driver

ok since my pierburg packed in ive had a weber put on and set up at a garage with the whole air box with all the vacume pipes where they should be ......so says the mechanic...i had an air leak on my carb gasket so i put a new one on, no leak now, new air filter(halfords budget ) and now its still not running right,

from cold i need the choke, so far so good, when it heats up it cant make up its mind whether its gonna idle high or low and cut out, im not even sure if the mixtures staying the same all the time as when its over revving its really deep and smells strongly of petrol, im sending it back to the garage to see if its anything obvious but do you guys have any ideas?

ta lads

Having same problem with mine buddy!
Try cleaning the Carb out? take it off, seperate the two halfs, carefully remove each jet in turn (presume its multi-jets?) use Cab cleaner all over it then use air line to blow out dirt in jets, replace fuel filter.
Maybe that you'v run petrol tank low and its picked up all the crap in the bottom of tank.
It only takes a tiny bit of dirt trying to fit through a jet!
I LOVE THE SOUND OF CARBS IN THE MORNING

mines runnin exactly the same... we've narrowed mine down to possibly  a fuel problem, and most definitely the carb, .... Need to make sure you give your driver a good blast down some nice roads, as that can also help get the system workin. Mine is my daily driver, and cos im only doins short runs, it need to get blasted atleast once a week, you'll find the black crap gets outta the system, and the car seems happier!

Hope you get sorted.. i'm lookin at a new carb now, hope you get sorted!

yep, carb it is, just got off the phone with me mechanic, the black stuff is just water mixing with the black stuff in the exhaust where i used to have it running really rich, itll clear. what i need is a carb cleaning kit for my weber, like Si says, its most likely a jet blocked, nice one Si

when you rev it the carb will spray a jet of fuel into the intake, so if its already running rich it will make it worse I expect.  Take the plugs out and check the condition, they should be a nice golden brown/whitish colour, not black & sooty.

i got a weber carb on my driver as well.. the only problems i had was some leaky water pipe. after i replaced the pipes etc with new rubber ones all was fine. Also i got a garage to emission test it and tune the carb so its running correct for a 1600cc motor.

do you have a squeaky noise when you accelerate etc especially on kold days? i get this and i think i got a loose/split pipe or maybe gasket somewhere or something isnt quite tight. i just cnt find what the f**k it is!!! its ok once warmed up though.

try getting it emission tested etc that might work..

this weber is sh!t, my top end speed is a struggle for 90 and my 0-60 is no quicker, even after its been to the garage and set up by a proper mechanic timing emmisions all done.im sure its something inside but i cant take it apart cause nowhere seems to do gaskets for them. so to be honest i dont see the hype about these carbs, maybe im just unlucky and have found the worst runnin weber in history but either way ive just bought myself a fully refurbished pierburg, i want everything back to normal, i miss my auto-choke, i miss an idle of 800 rather than 1500 then 2000 then back down to 400 then back up again etc.....i think a proper working pierburg is far better than a weber. cany wait to get it back on the car, cheers for the help tho lads

I know how you feel Haribo

In the 2 years I've owend mine its been back and forth to the garage more times than i care to remember.  Got a pierburg in mine and 'I've taken it to at least 4 different mechanics to try and get it set-up.  But as soon as one thing is fixed, something else has gone wrong!!

Gotten to the point where I'm getting rid come MOT time! I love my car but at the same time I can't be doing with the hassle of things going wrong.  MK4 TDI for me methinks......especially as my local VW garage offered me £500 for mine as a p/x which i thought was pretty good  :undecided:

hey thats a shame your finding the weber hard to configure. iv had mine in for about 2months and it works perfect, giving me  better acceleration and top end. Also increased feul economy!! what more could you want.

i bought a brand new one from europarts though. dnt trust second hand sh!te.
