New VR6
« on: 09 November 2003, 12:27 »
Hi all,

Newbie here  :)

I have just bought a 95/N dark silver Golf VR6. My first question (I'm sure there will be lots more to come!) is about the handling. I like to throw my cars around a little bit, and have a bit of a B-Road blast now and again!

But...from after driving round a couple of roundabouts quite spiritedly I am quite honestly scared to push it any harder. On a couple of tight turns I have even managed to shift all the weight and (I think) get the back wheel off the ground! Doesn't feel at all safe.

My previous car was a Ford Racing Puma, which had rock solid suspension and of course, was lighter. But I still kinda expected the VR6 to handle sweetly. I used to own a mk3 1.6CL, and although the suspension felt softer on that, it was more progressive and driftable around the corners.

Will something as simple as a spring/damper change sort this problem out (including the bodyroll). Where would be the best place to get this done; I am very close to AMD in Bicester, does anyone have any experiences of taking their VR6 there?

Thanks in advance!

Mike

p.s. one more question, I have a friend who is a real golf fan, and he says that my car has an LSD, is this true? Is it any good?

Try getting an aftermarket suspension kit, try c&r enterprises, they do a good weitic kit for ?300. Mk3 suspensions are generally poo, so they do need uprating. No golfs have an LSD fitted as standard, 16v and vr6 have EDL, Electronic Differential Lock which is in effect traction control. Maybe your mate is on LSD?  ;)

im almost sure this is a fact.

Golf mk3 chassis is a complete sh!t. the front suspension is hard (on GTI/VR6) but the rear is soft, this is because if they hardened up the rear to match the front, and u throw it into bends, u get wheel lift. so the softened it to stop this happening and have suspension travell. ... And just to add to it, u can bounce the ass off a Golf... but u cant bounce the front... LOL....

try it, goto your car and bounce the rear of it with ya hands... its soft as hell but this is cos the chassis is pure b0ll0x.

If you live near AMD in Bicester and have the cash to sort it out take it there!

I traveled 200 miles to them last week to get my chassis sorted and i am well pleased with it! Its just bedded in now after a weekend on the b roads where i live. It is sweet as. I can't believe the difference it has made, my golf has now become the best handling car i have owned i even prefer it in the corners to my mates Focus RS. I'm getting virturly no body roll, no wheel lift and its not at all harsh.

Koni dampers, Eibach springs! Best combo for golf mk3. From now on whenever i buy a new VAG car its goin straight to the boys at AMD!

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the mk3 chassis, the stock front springs are too soft, total sh!t. Uprated suspension kits are a must for gti/vr6. My vr6 drives much more like a mk2 with the lower suspension.
