Mine is a bit louder when it first starts each morning....if you stand outside the car for a while the extra noise fades away fairly suddenly (bit like when you turn the air-con off - compressor sort of noise i suppose) maybe it's something to do with the choke, or maybe i'm talking bollocks!!??

My 1.8T (got with 26k, now got 40k) always sounds noisy when first started. Id say it sounds pretty knackered for a couple of minutes but then it goes much quiter and smoother........hope that sounds technical enough, havent posted on here for about 147 years!!!!

my 1.8t sounds a bit rough in the mornings ive had the bonnet up a few times but im not to sure whats up ive have a dodgy noise coming from a black plastic box next to the coolant bottle i think its somethin to do with a charcoal cannister if that makes sense it sounds fine when its warm though

Mine sometimes sounds a touch grumpy for 10 secs on a cold start up (a slight grating?) , but from then on always fine. Only hear it if I put  my ear to the bonnett.

When you actually get out of your car and lift up the bonnet to listen, its easy to get paranoid as everything is noisier / less smooth.

Assuming the car is running well (not overheating), has enough oil and water then I can't see the point in worrying. I can't imagine changing oil will make the slightest difference - assuming it is of half decent quality.

Hi all. My 2003 1.8T GTi makes exactly the same noise for about a second on a cold start (TRRRRRR is spot on to describe it). I've been searching other forums and been told it could be starter motor or cam belt tensioner. Also heard that it is extremely common on Mk5 Golfs (anyone??) and nothing to worry about. It certainly doesn't sound normal to me. Is worse the colder the morning is, or if the car has been left a day or 2.

Anyone else get this / any more theories??

Cheers
