Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! HELP! Advice needed!
« on: 20 December 2005, 11:29 »
Had car checked over and bascially it looks like engine is knackered.

As it's an old 1.6i engine, its pretty rare I can get hold of a replacement one of these. Found a company with a 1.8 Gti for £175+VAT which is very good, HOWEVER my insurance are being arseholes saying they wouldnt insure me

If i get it replaced and 'forget' to declare it- will i have a problem finding insurance renewal quotes in april?

So stuck on what to do?!

There are plenty of insurance companie out there that will insure you with an engine conversion. However if you needed to claim and hadnt told them about the engine conversion and they spotted it they would just laugh at you and say NOPE.

You could also enqure about closing your policy and getting a refund. Often this is not feasable as they only give you about £50 out of £500 but they may take pitty on you if you explain the situation and ask nicely.

as above you must disclose the engine swap or could end up uninsured in the event of a claim which would increase next years premium and could lead to a conviction! Who you insured with at the moment?? how old are you? I would have no probs getting you a quote with an engine swap. if you wanna see if i can get you a good deal call me @ golf+ insurance on 08451 266366 or pm me ya number and i will call you.
With engine swaps we normally just rate it on the group of the donor vehicle.

hope this helps

if you have to cancel due to your insurers not accepting the risk then you can normally get them to give you a better cancellation rate than if you just cancel normally. It does depend on your insurer but always good to ask

just out of interest martin (sorry to drag this off topic for a moment) how do you rate ins. groups for hybrid/custom engine swaps ? is it based on bhp ?

yeh we use percentage loadings based on the increase in bhp of the engine (or the donor engine not original if there has been an engine swap).

My insurance went like this...

8v lump - £650
20vT (150bhp) - £650
20vT (210bhp) - £850
20vT (300bhp) - £1150

I only asked about the 300bhp option even though mine was around the 200bhp mark.

who you with dizzie?

would be similar with us,

from standard 8v to 20v turbo SHOULD be no change as they come out the same group,
20v turbo (+60bhp) 210bhp would work out about 35% load,
20v turbo (+150bhp) 300bhp would work out about 55% load

so that works out similar to what you got i think
