manual gearbox conversion?
« on: 18 December 2005, 23:38 »

I no what the response is straight away dnt bother get a GTI etc. Been there had one wrote it off, got points, got a 1.6 auto driver!

im quite handy with mechanics and im sick to death with a auto box, ok its nice to drive around town but sh!te on motorways with its 3speed box.

if i get myself a pedal box, gearbox, gear linkage. is this as easy as it sounds and a bolt on job?

also can the 1.8 gearbox be run with a 1.6 cos its got longer ratios so will see me better consumption on the motorways.

i cnt afford to sell the golf and buy a manual! and i cnt afford a GTI. and my driver is in excellent condition, not a scracth or dent anywhere. when i mean its mint i mean ITS f**king MINT, makes my breath so fresh. so hence i must stick with this until i find a decent job.

Not a case of no-one wanting to answer you, more a case of no-one knows if its possible or how to do it i would of thought.

it's not really that hard to swap a gearbox over mate, just arduious, cos you need a good day to do it and then get the linkage set up again, and either be string enough to hold the weight of the gearbox yourself, or have someone there helping. (gearbox weighs about 40kg+ at an estimate from hauling my old one and replacement one around and then attatching it)

If its possible then i will be able to help in the attaching the manual one, but not got a scooby about the auto and whether it will work.

You'll also need a manual steering rack, and I think the clutch is different on the auto boxes so you may need the flywheel from a 1.6 manual car.
After that it is just a case of unbolting stuff & swapping over :)

Edit: Oh and the auto carb is slightly different to the manual one, there is an extra vacuum connection which you may need to blank off, but I'm not 100% on that one.

hey thanks for all this.

sounds like a load of work... will get more concrete info before i start arsing about. if im going to do an engine swap might as well be something decent thats cheap to get hold off and not to expensive.

i was planning on a 8v conversion, what is the 2.0 like from the mk3? any good in a mk2?
