Look inside the fuel filler flap, I think you'll find that for a MkV it's as follows;

Half load = 2.4bar (35psi) Front & Rear
Full Load = 2.6bar (37.5psi) Front, 3.0bar (43.5psi) Rear

Thats madness, I've never put more than 34psi in car tyres in 15 years of being a mechanic!

Hi Lewy, I'm just repeating what it says inside the petrol filler flap on our own MkV GTI.

Not the same car I know, but just as a comparison & for the sake of this thread, I also have a MY02 Impreza WRX (215/40 R17's) that I run part load at 36PSI Front, 34PSI Rear. These pressures not only produce best steering feel & best handling balance, but also an even wear rate - i.e don't take the centre out of the tyre

There's no way you can compare a MkII 16v Golf that was intended to run on 185/60 R14's & weighs around 1100Kg's, with a MkV Golf GTI that weighs around 1900kg's & runs on 225/45 R17's.

When you bring the difference of aspect ratios into it, it becomes relative - psi (per square inch).

My 1990 Mk2 runs 185/60/14's, and my 2003 Mk4 runs 225/40/18's and both run about 28-30psi. There is no sign of over or under inflation, and always give me a positive feel, admittedly if I was going on a journey with luggage (or wife in the boot!) I would inflate the rear tyres accordingly

Like I said before I have changed ALOT of tyres in my 15 years, and I personally have never put this kind of pressure in them.
