Hello & help please !
« on: 16 December 2005, 20:40 »
Hi all, first post an all that ....

Thinking about buying a MK2 Gti as a main car, but have no experience of them. Would like to ask a couple of questions please ....

1. Is it still a reliable daily runabout ?

2. Is 100k anything to worry about with FSH ?

3. How well does the heater work ?

4. Does it have a heated rear window ?

5. Is a 5 door worth much less than a 3 ?

6. Real life combined mpg figures for 8 & 16v ?

Hope someone can help, any other pointers would be good, or point me to a buyers guide !

Thanks for any help

Hi all, first post an all that ....

Thinking about buying a MK2 Gti as a main car, but have no experience of them. Would like to ask a couple of questions please ....

1. Is it still a reliable daily runabout ? - most definately

2. Is 100k anything to worry about with FSH ? - shouldn't be a problem as long as its been looked after

3. How well does the heater work ? - generally well, although sometimes the matrixs need replacing

4. Does it have a heated rear window ? - yes

5. Is a 5 door worth much less than a 3 ? - to a enthusiast yes, but its the same with all hot hatches

6. Real life combined mpg figures for 8 & 16v ? depends on how you drive, i get 27 mpg around town and 40+ motorway, sensible driving (mine is a 16v)

Hope someone can help, any other pointers would be good, or point me to a buyers guide !

Thanks for any help

I get between 36-38mpg on my run to work- about 30 miles cross country.  HAve seen over 40 on dual carriageways, but mine needs a tune......

As for Head gasket mine has not ben done (previous owner had car since '91!), but I am expecting to do it in the summer as a precaution.  If in doubt, get it pressure checked by a local garage.

5. Is a 5 door worth much less than a 3 ?

Found this on the internet which I thought was quite interesting - http://www.eurotaxglass.co.uk/newspublisher/headlines/older/preview_car.asp?Id=30

With reference to the "3 door or 5 door" question, the following seemed to imply that 5 doors will be worth more one day............

"The biggest question where future GTi values are concerned is: “How many doors should it have?”.

Daniel Curnock is the proprietor of The 80Â’s Emporium, a small independent firm specialising in enthusiasts cars from the 80s and early 90s, selling everything from hot hatches to luxury grand tourers, offers some valuable advice.

“Five-door GTis are rare, especially the 16 valve versions, as they were only introduced in late 1990”, notes Curnock. “Furthermore, five-door cars tend to have been owned by family and professional folk and kept longer, and not thrashed by boy racers, so they are generally far better maintained than three-door cars. Many-five door GTis have impeccable service histories, a low number of keepers and are refreshingly original”. Though three-door cars will certainly be sought after in the future, the increased practicality and rarity value of the five-door may indeed give them a greater long-term market appeal and could make them the ones to go for."
