Pro
If it is a 1.6 then it must be a really early one. If it has a carb I would not touch it. If it has fuel injection I would pay no more than a grand.
I got a ex concours 1.8 GLI Cabby from Ebay in the late summer for £825. It is a stunner and only had 65k with masses of history. Do not let the heart rule the head

110k miles just had a push in the lock and the plastic cowling broken, no wire damage at all...
also any ideas what would stop a power hood working.....
other than a fuse or a faulty switch...

Check that there's some oil for the hydraulics. If you look in the boot there's a cylinder (for lack of a better description) and it will have a min/max level on it, if the oils low then go to VW and get some hydraulic fluid, I've got some in my boot so I can probably get a part number if required. Not saying this will fix it, but it wont help if it's not got any. If you need any help with the fuses and relays, check this website
