sounds like a tractor

 why does my gti 8valve sound like a tractor??  when it idles it  seems to knock really bad, its a bit embarrasing, when i boot it it goes like stink!!!  but i hate the knocking!!!!!  any easy fixes?

How many miles, has it ever been run with low/no oil??

has 124 thousand, and as far as i know it hasnt been run with out oil, ive only had it  a month and seems to be one problem after another, think it is the tappets but i dont want to admit  it lol  :angry:

Any garage should be able to do it for a few quid, or
If you remove the oil cap can you see the cam? or is there a plastic cover?
If there is no cover then you should see the oil being chucked everywhere by time the engine is up to operating temperature.

there is no plastic thing there and it does chuck it   around so i guess thats ok then, its the tappets aint it??? lol are they expensive? could i do them my self?

tappets tend to make more of a ticking noise rather than a bang and clank

there is a good chance the exhaust manifold is leaking at the head!

The knocking sound could be the big end on the way out :undecided: , my bottom end started to rattle, but it has just done 178k & it's has been replaced with a 2.0L bottom end  :evil:
