It will not idle!!
« on: 07 December 2005, 23:24 »
Hi there

My 1990 8v digi will not idle. The car starts ok if it is not too cold and runs ok for 2-3 mins. Then it just idles progressively worse until it refuses to idle at all. It runs quite well and feels strong but this is driving me potty. Have done plugs, dizzzy cap, rotor arm, ht leads but to no avail. Does anyone know what this is?
Thanks
Alan

seriously though, is it from cold only, how about when its warm?
mine was a pain with the idle when i got it and after a week i found one of the vacuum hoses from airbox was split, changed it and reset the idle - sorted.
Cant afford a sig.....

Hi Chugadub

It idles fairly well for the first 2-3 mins after starting from cold once it is warm it just will not idle. I can prevent the stall with a bit of jiggery pokery with the throttle pedal but it idles very poorly lumpy and spluttery.
Sorry about the decription

1st thing to do is replace the blue temp sender, about £10ish from VW :)

There is no 5th injector on a 8v Digi?  Either way it isn't the same thing if they want £60 for it :)

when i replace the cylinder head on my wifes digi i forgot to plug in the airflow meter and it did the same as you are saying so i would check the connections to the air flow meter or even change it for one from a scrappy and see if it sorts it.

Hi there
Thanks for your replies. It is a pain in the arse. I have unplugged various sensors and the one which does not make a difference is the one in front of the blue temp sender, does anyone know what this does?
Cheers

The black one?  Thats for your temp gauge so I wouldn't worry if nothing happens when you unplug it :)

Cheers rj :embarassed:
I also meant to add that it is quite a poor starter. I put in new battery so it cranks over really well but it is really reluctant to fire up. When it finally does the starter seems to turn over really slowly just before the car starts then it will start and stop fine until the next day????Pisser
