If you want performance then get Airfilter, Cam, ECU remap, and Exhaust Manifold. This combination of bits will see you good performance if set-up correctly. Trouble is, people do one thing to their engine but  not others. Stainless Steel Exhausts are great for noise and lifetime garantee as long as you stay same size bore.
VW Factory made the bore that size for a reason!

So fitting a sports exhaust won't help performance?

Yeah, it will release a couple of ponies.
But its all mainly for noise! Like i said, they help gases escape more quickly which is ideal for turbo or Supercharged cars, but Normally aspirated engines need to hold back pressure back.

Fitting a sports exhaust and filter certainly made my vr6 more reponsive, and that is a naturally aspirated engine.

Yeah, its made all my cars more responsive too.
With your VR6, the Airfilter sucks in more air, so the air/flow meter says oohh, need more fuel, so it richens the mixture, thats why its more responsive. But it cant ignite the fuel quick enuf so looses a bit of unburnt fuel out exhaust.
Thats on an exadurated scale!

All engines will lose a bit of unburnt fuel out the exhaust. On my vr6 it is very minimal judging by the emissions on the last MOT.
On road cars, most will benefit from a sports exhaust and a sports filter. This is because manufacturers want to keep noise levels down, but this also hinders performance.
I don't think you can really compare a road car to a rally car, as they are highly tuned, and any alteration could prove critical. On a road car this is not as important.
From my own experiences, a k&n and a drilled box proved to be the best mod on my vr6, better than the exhaust.
This is not because i got huge overall gains, but because i got a much more responsive car.
With a stock filter and a standard airbox, the car did very little below 4000rpm, but with a k&n and a drilled box, the car started to pull well at about 2000rpm.
Personally i have had 2 16v's and a vr6, this has proved the case with all the cars.
The better a road car can breathe, the more performance, its that simple.

Thats what i was saying earlier, to get the most from the engine you cant just stick on a air filter and exhaust, you need to fit high lift Cam, and get Head port and polished. That way you get nice delivery of air / fuel.
